TECHNOLOGY: Sensor-based monitoring
Client NeedAs part of a government grant, a company specializing in textile manufacturing developed a shirt with integrated sensors for monitoring emergency first responders. The company needed a wireless system to measure and transmit signals such as heart rate, activity, position, respiration and body temperature to a portable base station for monitoring.
PROJECT SUMMARYWorking with our customer, we designed and developed an ambulatory monitor that interfaced with the customer’s shirt sensors. This monitor continuous transmitted signals to the a base station computer so the emergency coordinator could monitor each first responder’s vital signs. The base station software included a graphical interface utilizing colors to alert the emergency coordinator if a first responder was in trouble. The units were successfully tested with the Arlington County Virginia first responder teams under simulation disaster situations, allowing the customer to demonstrate the proof-of-concept of their sensor shirt.
